2 and 3 and something I should have been doing from the start, great reminders!
I feel the Personal Brand thing is a bit overhyped. A lot of people build personal brands today without having a clear offer or providing value at all. It's like becoming a YouTuber in the past decade or a Tiktoker now. While I'm building a personal brand by writing for more than a decade and publishing courses and books, I do that to have something going on besides work, not to increase my chances of getting work.
I landed my current 9 to 5 in May and while the people who interviewed me appreciated my blog posts and ideas on software testing (these are getting thousands of views monthly) it didn't matter much. It was a tiny, tiny plus.
Thanks Akos. You are right, it won’t make a difference in interview performance, but it will increase your chances of building a network that can help refer you in need.
I like the analogy of buying insurance by ensuring you have a strong network and that your knowledge is shared publicly, as external proof outside an organisation.
Also, thank you, Gourav, for mentioning my gap year piece. I appreciate it!
This article perfectly captures and addresses common misconceptions regarding networking in the professional world
I would also add that when you are reaching out to that friend or colleague you worked with on a past project, it's good to also mention how you worked together to jog their memory. Referrals from people you actually know or worked with tend to carry weight
Very true, building your network will make it easier at ever stage of the process.
A cold call/email/message is almost never going to work without any kind of relationship.
I love how learning this concept applies to your interviewing, selling a product or anything else in life.
Thanks for the mention to strategizeyourcareer.com, Gourav!

You're absolutely right! 👏 Now when I think about it, I'm connected with developers from all the top companies! 😃
